New I-9 Edition Available
On April 2, 2025 the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) made minor language updates to the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. This updated version is dated 1/20/2025.
What Does this Mean for Employers?
The use of the new Form I-9 is optional.
Employers may continue using the 8/1/23 editions of the form that are valid until 7/31/26 or 5/31/27.
The forms are valid until their expiration dates. Learn more about the changes to the Employment Eligibility Verification form here.
Summary of Form I-9 Changes
New edition date: 1/20/2025. The expiration date is May 31, 2027.
Use of the term “alien” instead of “noncitizen” and use of the term “sex” instead of “gender.” The Form I-9 Instructions also reflect the updated terminology.
Revised description of two list B documents to the Lists of Acceptable Documents
As of April 3, 2025, the E-Verify and E-Verify+ are updated with the terminology changes.
